What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is the term for increased curvature of the spine, which can occur at any location in the spine. There is also Kyphosis (excessive rounding in the middle of the back) also known as “hunchback”, and Lordosis (excessive inward curve of the lower back) also called “swayback”. These changes in the alignment of the spine can cause pain and will affect the muscles surrounding the spine, neck, hips, shoulders, ribs, and can often influence breathing patterns.

What Happens to the Muscles With Scoliosis?

The increased curvature in the spine will create an imbalance that alters the muscles and connective tissue along the spine and surrounding joints. One side of the curve will have shortened muscles and compression on the spine while the other side will have muscles that are over stretched and strained.

This can lead to overall weakness in surrounding muscles, referred pain away from the site of the scoliosis, difficulty with completing daily activities, and generalized fatigue

Common Diagnoses Associated With Scoliosis

  • Bursitis
  • Myofascial Pain Syndrome
  • Postural Dysfunction
  • Spinal Spondylosis or Stenosis
  • Headaches
  • Low Back Pain
  • Sciatica
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

Our Approach to Treating Scoliosis

During your evaluation a thorough examination will be performed to assess the direction and degree of curvature, overall strength of the surrounding muscles, joint mobility, and flexibility to develop a plan to address the structural and functional limitations you are experiencing.

Treatment protocol will be individualized based on findings and will include: soft tissue release, Advanced Spinal Mobilization Instrument (ASMI), myofascial cupping, trigger point release, trigger point dry needling, joint and spinal mobilization, postural strengthening, muscle retraining, spinal stability exercises, rib cage and spinal mobility training for breathing.

Time spent on each technique varies and time-frame of treatment can be customized to individual needs.
